Archived process instances might still receive updates from the external variable endpoint. We should either find a way to support these updates, or alternatively document the limitations and validate against incorrect usage.

• We might still be able to support updates if the target index is not the alias
• If we can't, we still need to prevent the attempted update as it could result in a new duplicate document in the write index.
