Currently when querying for historic variable instances, there is no query option for filtering for only Process instance vs local variables.  The only way to determine this seems to be using the ProcessInstanceID == ActivityInstanceID logic, where you are filtering for processinstanceID and activityInstanceIdIn.  This does not appear to be documented anywhere, and is quite confusing when trying to find specific variable instances.
