The actual developer environment is not really frontend development friendly.
Starting the CE and the EE platform side by side requires

• knowledge about the Maven build (a typical frontend developer has not)
• manipulations in the backend (this is bad because you generally have to roll them back and it is worse because you do not know what you are doing)

On top of that, those "exotic setups" limit - highly - valuable development features (like livereloading).
